Yasawa makes big plan

YASAWA Rugby Union will kick off its 2018 season with the opening round of the Yasawa rally at Churchill Park in Lautoka today.

The newly-elected union executives have set out a three-year development plan to build a strong platform to qualify for major union in the future.

Union secretary Akuila Ratu said the aim was to get a structure in place.

“We are not seeking promotion this year nor next year,” Ratu said.

“We are looking at a three-year development plan. We are aware that the seventh and eighth placed teams in the Skipper Cup competition every year get automatically demoted to the Vanua Cup competition. A team needs to be in the top six every year if it is to survive relegation.

“This will entail a paradigm shift in mentality and focus on development of structures. As part of development, the union has introduced our under-20 club competition. Next year we wish to introduce an U18 division.”

Opening round fixtures: 2pm Waya-Nacula, 3.45pm Yaqeta-Viwa, 5.30pm Naviti-Yasawa-i-rara.

Tickets: $5 (adults), $2 (school children).
