ELEVEN households on Yacata Island that were damaged during Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016 are still awaiting their housing material which they acquired under the State’s Help for Homes initiative.

Village headman Jone Vakatale highlighted this during a talanoa session with the Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau during a talanoa session on the island.

Mr Koroilavesau led a delegation from various government ministries to visit the island on September 9 as part of his tour to various islands in Northern Lau.

Mr Vakatale said they have already acquired the materials, but were unsure whether Government would still be providing transportation for the materials to the island or not.

“I m just quering because we are still waiting for the materials to be transported here. Is the Government still responsible for transporting these materials?”

In his response, Mr Koroilavesau said he would look into this issue when he returned to Suva.

“Yes, the Government should provide the barge to transport these materials, I will look into this once I return to Suva,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

Mr Vakatale also said the names and details of the 11 households were given to the Minister for Youth and Sports, Laisenia Tuitubou when he visited the island earlier this year.
