World Rugby confirms 7s RWC date

Fiji 7s team has less than 15 months to prepare for the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 which will be held in San Francisco, California next year.

Fiji has won the tournament twice — 1997 and 2005, captained by 7s mastero Waisale Serevi.

The tournament will be played from July 20-22 with 24 men’s and 16 women’s teams.

World Rugby reported the tournament will be played at the AT&T Park which is the home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team that has the capacity of 42,000 spectators.

World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont in the report said; “Announcing the exact dates of the tournament is an important stage of preparation as it means that supporters can start to plan their trip. With three days of amazing rugby action on offer, coupled with everything else San Francisco and surrounding area has to offer, it could really be the holiday of a lifetime for rugby fans around the world.”

Fiji’s team in 2005 had Semisi Naevo, Marika Vunibaka, Sireli Bobo, William Ryder, Ifereimi Rawaqa, Jone Daunivucu, Villiame Satala, Apolosi Satala, Filimoni Delasau Waisale Serevi, Neumi Nanuku and Nasoni Roko. The Wayne Pivac-coached side defeated New Zealand 29-19 in the final.

The USA rugby chief executive officer Dan Payne said they were proud to host the RWC 7s 2018.

“This event will bring the world’s best and put them in front of a large audience of rugby fanatics in the US, showcasing our great sport to a new batch of sports fans,” the website reported.

New Zealand, meanwhile, is the defending champion after they beat the Ben Ryan-coached England side 33-0 in the final in Russia in 2013.
