Workshop aims to strengthen safety of navigation in Pacific

THE Pacific Community (SPC) this morning commenced its phase one regional workshop on the Pacific Safety and Navigation Project at the Lotus Building in Nabua, Suva.

Policy legal officer and project manager of the project, Francesca Pradelli said the workshop which was run by the SPC Oceans and Maritime Program was to strengthen the safety of navigation in the 13 Pacific Island nations.

“This is a big project that started three years ago in 2016 funded by the International Foundation for Aids to Navigation (IFAN) and it has 13 pacific island countries targeted,” she said.

“The aim is to strengthen the safety of navigation services in those countries and most particularly aids to navigation services.”

Ms Pradelli added the team was looking into building the recommendations that were made during the first phase and work on the three pillars, the technical, legal and economic aspects to potentially increase the safety of navigation in the countries.
