Cane farmers have been reminded to sustainably practice farming methods to protect and preserve the environment.

With the harvesting season to start next week, two non -governmental organisations  have joined forces with the Labasa Cane Producers Association in organising workshops for cane farmers in Vanua Levu.

The Sustainable Land Management and Sustainable Forest Management workshop aims at educating farmers about their roles in protecting their surroundings.

LCPA’s project officer Lakhan Kumar said farmers needed to know their roles in protecting their cane farms, nearby rivers and creeks and general surroundings.

“They use weedicides on their farms and this workshop is informing them about ensuring that it doesn’t get into the surrounding streams and rivers,” he said.

The workshop was organised by LCPA, facilitated by WWF and funded by SPREP
