Dvelopments within SODELPA have created an opportunity for Unity Fiji to woo some of that party’s supporters to their side as they build up to the 2022 general election, says Unity Fiji leader Savenaca Narube.
Speaking at a community engagement at Wainidinu settlement in Lami this week, Mr Narube insisted that SODELPA could expect to lose some of its supporters.
“Now with the current situation SODELPA is in, it could give birth to ideas for its supporters to start looking at joining another political party,” Mr Narube said.
“Their supporters will now consider voting for the party in the next general elections.
“SODELPA is now giving that exposure to our party because of the problem it is currently in, but I hope they will solve all these internal issues.
“We can see that their supporters are coming to us, I am not trying to tarnish the party but this is the truth and the party has been facing problems for a long time now.” He said SODELPA supporters would now question the credibility of their party.
“Now their loyal supporters will begin to question the party… what else are we doing here? We should move to another party.
“Then they will go on to say that they need a political party with good leadership, then ask why they are still sitting in a party that has been in problems for quite a long time now.”
He said Unity Fiji could be the “new kid on the block” but they have the potential to make a difference.
“Let me explain it, in 2018 we got 8000 votes, I got 6000, in ranking we were the fourth political party. In the last elections, we only had 10 months to prepare ourselves but now we have two years to prepare for the next general elections in 2022.”
Questions sent to SODELPA general secretary Emele Duituturaga were unanswered when this edition went to press last night.
