The local tourism sector has taken sustainability to a whole new level with the launch of exclusive and new brand electric vehicles in Nadi yesterday.
Officiating at the launch, Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka noted that as tourism continued to grow, so did its impact on the environment.
“It’s a cost we bear as tourists, as businesses, and as governments,” the minister said.
“Against a current ambition scenario, by 2030 transport-related carbon (CO2) emissions from tourism are estimated to grow 25 per cent from 2016 levels.
“Transport-related CO2 emissions of the tourism sector are 22 per cent of the whole emissions from transport.”
The minister said Fiji’s commitment to sustainability was unwavering and sustainability must be at the forefront with the tourism industry playing a pivotal role in this endeavour.
Mr Gavoka said the electric vehicles being introduced by Tourism Fiji marked a significant step forward.
He said the vehicles were not just environmentally friendly; they were also an embodiment of the country’s commitment to sustainable practices.
“The batteries used in these electronic vehicles are produced in a sustainable manner, reducing environmental footprint.
“I am told the Blade Battery technology developed by BYD signifies a notable breakthrough in electric vehicle battery technology.
“It provides 50 per cent more space utilisation, passing all security and risk checks with technology engineered for longevity, ensuring a prolonged lifespan. With enhanced safety, durability, and performance, it stands as a significant development in the realm of electric vehicle batteries.”
Mr Gavoka said sustainability efforts would not end with electric vehicles alone, they were also actively working on implementing solar chargers for these cars.
Meanwhile, Solar Hub has agreed to partner with Tourism Fiji to supply and install solar EV charging stations free of charge.
