* Because the bacteria can be spread through common behaviours such as coughing and sneezing, practising good hygiene can help protect all people from getting the bacteria.
* Good hygiene practices include: covering your mouth and nose with tissue or handkerchief when coughing and sneezing.
* If a tissue is not available, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow rather than the hand.
* Washing hands often with soap and water regularly or using a hand sanitiser, especially after coughing or sneezing; disposing of tissues in the bin or washing your handkerchief daily with soap and water; by not sharing cups, water bottles, utensils, cigarettes and other items that may contain saliva or spit.
