IF police officers cross the line and breach the law, they will be charged and their jobs will be at stake, says Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu.

He said the action of charging police officers for breaching laws reflected transparency within the force.

“When police officers breach the law, we take them to task, we charge them, so the message is very clear to all the officers and they know themselves that if they cross the line they will be charged and their job will be at stake at that point in time,” he said.

“There has been a lot of training that has been done and police officers themselves, once they march in, they receive their basic training which is done so that they know they are the enforcers of the law and they do not break them.”

He said it was important for all officers to know that they were not above the law.

“We are trying our best, we do not condemn and continuously we are emphasising to supervisors the need to mentor, counsel and redirect our young police officers.

“We are not above the law and once we cross the line, we will also go through the same process as those breaching the laws.”

He said they were looking at reviewing recruitment policies.

“We are looking into it, I have given some guidance to our human resources team and also in our training.

“We need to nurture the recruits well from the start, once we have that and ground them properly from the start level, they will go far.”
