For 32-year-old Alison Gibson, there was no better way to welcome the new year than to spend it in Fiji.
Originally from Sydney in Australia, she was accompanied by her mum Debra Menzies for a holiday in the country.
The pair arrived into the country on December 27 and spent two days learning the local culture and spent time outdoors relaxing at the Namosi Eco Retreat.
“We went to Namosi Eco Retreat – we stayed there for two days and it was beautiful,” Ms Gibson said.
“We had to cross a river to get there, everyone was very friendly, there was lots of travelling and we had kava.
“We came to Suva just to see the markets and after this we’ll go to Nadi to Serenity Island Resort where we will be spending our New Year’s Day.”
Mum, Ms Menzie said it was her third trip to Fiji since her first trip in the 1980’s and said every trip back to Fiji was better than the last one.
“We just booked the flight and we didn’t really know it would be for New Year’s Day, but here we are and we’re loving the experience so far,” she said.
Ms Menzie’s New Year’s Day message to the people of Fiji was to “enjoy and have lots of kava”.
“I’d like to wish the people of Fiji and everyone back at home in Australia reading this a very happy new year and wish them good health.
“We hope to come back and spend our holiday in Fiji.” The mother and daughter travel back to Australia tomorrow.
