Two All Whites are set to line up for the Wellington Phoenix this summer – and they could yet be joined by a number of Football Ferns.

Midfielder Clayton Lewis and fullback James McGarry are understood to have agreed terms with the A-League club ahead of the 2020-21 season, which is set to start December 27.

The 2020-21 W-League season is set to start the same day – and the prospect of a Phoenix women’s team being involved has suddenly become very real after it appeared to be growing increasingly unlikely.

In September, the Guardian reported there would be no expansion in 2020-21 and when Football Federation Australia announced last Thursday that the coming season would consist of 57 matches – the same number as last season – that appeared to be fixed in stone.

New Zealand Football chief executive Andrew Pragnell was coy on the subject when speaking to Stuff the day after the FFA announcement, while a Phoenix spokesman said at the time they wouldn’t be commenting on the W-League – or anything else.
