Fiji’s climate may begin to exhibit La-Niña like patterns in the coming months.

This was revealed by the Fiji Meteorological Services’ outlook from September to November.

According to the report, although the phenomenon would occur in the region over the coming months, it would be weak.

“Most of the atmospheric and oceanic indicators in the Pacific Ocean are approaching weak La-Niña thresholds,” the Fiji Met summary stated.

“However, declaration of a fully sustained La-Niña event is yet to happen.

“Most of the global climate models predict establishment of a La-Niña event during the September to November 2020 period, which is favoured to continue through to the December 2020 to February 2020 period.

“If a La-Niña event does establish, it is expected to be a weak one.”

Meanwhile, Fiji Met Services acting manager forecasting Sakeasi Rabitu explained that widespread rainfall was registered across the country this week.

“The highest 24-hour rainfall was recorded on the day at Kubulau with 83mm, followed by Nasinu with 77mm and RKS with 61mm. Some good rainfall was also recorded in the Western and Northern Division on September 9, with Labasa, Seaqaqa, Sigatoka, Nadi Airport, Lautoka Mill, Rarawai Mill and Penang Mill recording 26mm, 35mm, 41mm, 31mm, 22mm, 35mm and 27mm, respectively.

“Since then, the weather has generally been fine across the country.”
