A tropical disturbance TD02F was analysed near Solomon Islands yesterday, and is expected to drift towards Fiji by early next week.

While the chances of TD02F to form into a tropical cyclone are low for today, the national weather forecasting centre in Nadi says it becomes moderate to high by next Tuesday.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has advised members of the public to be vigilant and use this time to prepare their households accordingly.

“As we enter this new cyclone season, the NDMO wishes to reiterate that now ia the time to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of each individual, household, and community,” the NDMO stated.

“Members of the public are reminded of current alerts in place for parts of the country, and urged to continue to adhere to advisories issued by the relevant authorities.”

Key updates:

  • Heavy rain alert continues for the Northern Division, Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau and Lomaiviti groups;
  • Rain and thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls likely to develop and become frequent over these areas from later tonight;
  • Expected to spread over the rest of the country from later today
  • Strong wind warning in force for the land areas of Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, coastal areas from Sigatoka to Suva to Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, southern Bua, Cakaudrove and eastern Macuata;
  • Strong wind warning remains in force for all Fiji waters.

The Fiji Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the situation as the system develops, and will issue advisories as and when necessary.
