Members of the public, particularly those in maritime islands have been put on high alert as heavy rain and strong wind warnings have been issued.
The national weather forecasting centre in Nadi says a southeast wind flow prevails over the groups; and a trough of low pressure with associated cloud and rain lies slow moving to the north of Fiji.
It is expected to drift south and affect the northern and eastern parts of the group from later today.
The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) says a strong wind warning is in force for all Fiji waters; and a heavy rain alert in force for the Northern Division, Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Lau, and the Lomaiviti group.
“Residents in these areas are urged to be prepared for localised flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, minor roads, Iris crossings and bridges can be expected,” the NDMO stated.
“The general public is advised to stay away from flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads and walkwats where water is above knee level. Do not attempt to cross or swim.”
Residents in alerted areas are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures; and if evacuation is necessary, to move while it is still daylight.
Those who need assistance to move to higher grounds can contact the Fiji Police Force on 917 or the National Fire Authority on 910.
Motorists are also encouraged to adhere to advisories from authorities because weather conditions could disrupt traffic flow and result in poor visibility on land areas.
The forecast to midnight tonight for the Fiji group, cloudy with some showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Northern Division, greater Suva-Nausori-Tailevu-Rakiraki areas, Serua-Namosi-Naitasiri, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti groups.
Rain developing and becoming frequent over the Northern Division later today and gradually spreading south to the rest of the country.
