A HEAVY rain warning that was previously in force for the interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands and southern Lau Group is now downgraded to a heavy rain alert.

A Government statement issued this afternoon by the Fiji Meteorological Service confirmed this saying isolated localised heavy falls may cause flash flooding, especially in the low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Members of the public are advised to keep away from flooded drains, small streams and rivers.

Motorists are advised to take extreme care when driving in these rainy conditions.

Meanwhile, expect periods of rain, heavy at times and few thunderstorms over Southern Lau group, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, the interior, Southern and Eastern parts of Viti Levu.

For the rest of Fiji, cloudy periods with showers, especially in the afternoon or evening, are anticipated. Expect moderate to fresh East to Southeast winds and moderate to rough seas.

Rain is anticipated to be further enhanced in the coastal areas by onshore wind flow, which can be fresh and gusty at times.

For mariners, a strong wind warning remains in force for Southwest Viti Levu waters, Vatu-i-Ra and Kadavu passages, Yasawa and Mamanuca waters.
