Weather watch: Heavy rain alert remains in force

A HEAVY rain alert remains in force for most parts of the country.

The weather bulletin issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 10:45am today says heavy rain alert remains in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti group, Yasawa group and the eastern half of Viti Levu.

A trough of low pressure remains just to the north of Fiji.

Associated cloud and showers affect the northern and eastern parts of the group.

It is expected to affect Fiji for the next few days.

The forecast to midnight tomorrow for the Fiji group, expect occasional showers and few thunderstorms over Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, eastern half and interior of Viti Levu, Lau, and Lomaiviti group and the Yasawa group.

Showers are expected to increase and become frequent and heavy from tonight.

Elsewhere, cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms especially in the afternoon or evening.

Isolated heavy falls likely and localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low lying areas.

For mariners expect moderate to fresh East to Southeast winds, gusty at times and rough seas.
