Weather watch: Heavy rain alert in force for Vanua Levu and smaller islands

A HEAVY rain alert is now in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti group, Yasawa group, Kadavu and eastern half of Viti Levu.

The weather bulletin issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 10:56am today says a trough of low pressure with the associated cloud and showers lies over the group and is expected to gradually intensify tomorrow.

It is expected to affect the group until early next week.

As for the forecast to midnight tomorrow for the Fiji group, expect occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti group, Yasawa group, Kadavu and eastern half of Viti Levu.

Showers possibly increasing to rain and becoming frequent and heavy with squally thunderstorms from tomorrow.

For the rest of Fiji, expect afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms.

Isolated heavy falls expected.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low lying areas.
