Weather watch: Heavy rain alert for most parts of Fiji

A HEAVY rain alert remains in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti Group, the eastern half and interior of Viti Levu.
According to the weather forecast issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service at 8:58pm last night, a trough of low pressure lies slow moving over Vanua Levu and is expected to drift south later today.
Associated cloud and showers affects the northern and eastern parts of the Group and is expected for the next few days.
An earlier strong wind warning for the Fiji waters has also been cancelled.
A flood alert is also in force for low lying areas adjacent to Waimanu River.
Occasional showers are expected over Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, eastern half and interior of Viti Levu, Lau and Lomaiviti group and the Yasawa Group. Isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls is also likely. Showers possibly increasing to rain and becoming frequent and heavy from tonight.
For the rest of the country, cloudy periods with showers especially in the afternoon and evening. Isolated afternoon heavy falls and thunderstorms possible.
Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low lying areas. Therefore, communities living in flood prone and low lying areas are reminded to be alert to the possibility of flooding.
For Fiji waters, mariners can expect easterly winds 15 to 20 knots with moderate to rough seas and moderate southerly swells. Poor visibility in areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms.
“We will continue monitoring the situation closely and any alert and warning will be issued as and when necessary. Members of the public are advised to remain updated with the latest weather information and take alerts and warnings seriously,” the weather office stated.
