A HEAVY rain alert is now in force for the interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, northern Yasawa and northern Lau Group.

This comes in anticipation of a trough of low pressure with associated cloud and showers remaining to the north of Vanua Levu.

According to a statement issued from the Fiji Meteorological Service, the trough is expected to gradually drift south and merge with another trough approaching from the west and affect the Fiji Group from tomorrow.

“Expect occasional rain, heavy at times and few thunderstorms over Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, northern Yasawa and northern Lau Group, the interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu from later tomorrow,” the weather office stated.

“For the rest of Fiji, expect occasional showers with possible isolated heavy falls.”

Meanwhile, strong winds continue to affect parts of Fiji land areas and all Fiji Waters.

The weather office stated that this is due to a high pressure system to the far southeast of Fiji that continues to direct fresh to strong easterly wind flow over the Group.

“Expect fresh to strong easterly winds with speeds of 40 to 50km/hr and gusting to 60km/hr over southern and northern Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti, Yasawa and Mamanuca group, southern and northern parts of Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands. Elsewhere, anticipate moderate to fresh easterly winds, gusting at times,” it stated.

In anticipation of this, a “Strong Wind Warning” remains in force for land areas of southern and northern Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti group and Yasawa and Mamanuca group, southern and northern parts of Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands.

Mariners are informed that a “Strong Wind Warning” remains in force for all Fiji waters. Expect easterly winds of 25 to 30 knots with rough to very rough seas and moderate southerly swells.
