Weather update: Heavy rain alert for Fiji cancelled

A HEAVY rain alert previously in force for the rest of Fiji is now cancelled, the weather office has confirmed.

Fiji Meteorological Service, in an update issued at 11am this morning, stated that a trough of low pressure remains slow moving over Fiji.

Associated active rain bands have drifted south-eastwards away from the group.

Occasional showers expected over the eastern parts and interior of the larger islands. Isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls in the afternoon or evening anticipated over most places.

Acting director of meteorology Viliame Vereivalu confirmed that a heavy rain warning previously in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lomaiviti, Yasawa and northern Lau Group was now cancelled.

“The strong wind warning previously in force for land areas of Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lomaiviti, Yasawa and Northern Lau Group is now cancelled,” he said.

“A strong wind warning remains in force for Northern Vanua Levu Waters, Yasawa Waters, Northern Koro Sea, Kadavu and Vatu-I-Ra Passages.”

For Northern Vanua Levu Waters, Northern Lau Waters, Yasawa Waters, northern Koro Sea, Southwest Viti Levu Waters, Kadavu and Vatu-i-Ra Passages, mariners can expect northeast to southeast winds 20 to 25 knots easing later today with rough seas gradually abating and moderate southerly swells.

For the rest of Fiji Waters, mariners can expect east to southeast winds 15 to 20 knots with moderate to rough seas.
