THE rights of people living with disabilities need to be recognised by the community they live in, says Fiji Disabled People’s Federation outreach officer Peniasi Rawaidranu.
Mr Rawaidranu said people living with disabilities were always left out during village meetings and gatherings.
“We want our rights to be respected and we want our rights to be involved in the community,” he said while speaking at the 2019 Human Rights Day community awareness session in Vunidawa, Naitasiri yesterday.
“Whatever is done in the community, we also want to be included.” He said human rights were for everyone.
“We need to be in full participation in whatever is happening.”
Meanwhile, Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission director Ashwin Raj said young people were an important catalyst for transformational change.
He said they were a repository of political will and drivers of enduring solutions to the most intractable human rights challenges confronting the world today.
Mr Raj said young people in these communities deserve to be heard, given an opportunity to shape human rights agenda.
