Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube says it’s shocking that communities in Fiji continue to suffer water cuts for years.

In a statement, Mr Narube revealed that during his campaigns across the country, he had received many complaints from residents about water supply disruptions.

“In our campaign across Fiji, we are hearing of severe problems of water supply disruptions,” he said.

“One such area is along Bau Rd, in Vunivaivai, Cautata, Waicoka, Nabua, Dravo, Naila and Ovea villages and settlements.

“We are told that they have been living with these water disruptions for years.”

On Wednesday a team from The Fiji Times visited the area and spoke to Jeremiah Laioni-ni-Juta, 59, and Isikeli Tawake, 47, of Cautata Village. Mr Laioni-ni-Juta said the water problems began five months ago.

“I have to wake up at 2am every day to fill buckets with water,” he said.

“The water is then turned off. It’s become a daily routine for us.

“We’ve not been told why this is happening.”

Mr Tawake said that at times he didn’t shower because there was no water.

“I stay on the hill and we never get water,” he said.

“We have to walk down to the road and fill our buckets from the water supply provided.” Mr Laioni-ni-Juta said water trucks only come around if they were notified by the villagers.
