Watch that alcohol

Listen to this article:

DEPUTY Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu is urging people to drink alcohol sensibly this festive season.

It makes sense that the police would be concerned about its consumption following two separate incidents involving alcohol last week.

Three people in their 50s fell from the second floor of an apartment building during a party in Nasese and a man in his 40s fell from a double-storey building in Laucala Beach, Suva.

It stands to reason though that we can expect alcohol consumption as we are smack bang into the festive season.

As we count down to Christmas day and to the dawn of another new year, history will confirm many people’s traditional leaning to alcohol consumption in access at this time of the year.

It’s a time of festivities anyhow, some may suggest. Surely we cannot cast aside the fact that alcohol has been part of festivities for a very long time.

However, as Mr Tudravu said, people needed to be responsible of themselves first. Police, he stressed, cannot be expected to be everywhere all the time.

The police force’s aim, he said, was for an incident-free festive season.

He admitted though, they would not be able to stop people from enjoying themselves.

“If you are enjoying yourselves, please think about your safety first and think about the things that you will do because accidents can happen,” he said.

Some accidents could cost a life, he said, as many social gatherings were happening throughout the country.

It is this time of the year that we traditionally see a massive amount of travelling as well.

Many families would be on the road as the days inch closer to Christmas day and Boxing day.

They are holidays that carry different meanings for different people.

While the faithful will celebrate Christmas for its religious meaning, there are many who will consider it an opportunity to let their hair down, kick off their shoes and embrace a bit of rest and recuperation.

The challenge is for us all to be responsible. Alcohol can be a tempting proposition for many people. It can be a distraction for some.

The key is being responsible. It is knowing when to stop, and when to lean on safety first when out and about.

We should embrace the advice of the police, be mindful of what we plan to do, consider safety a priority and keep our loved ones safe.
