Renowned Australian College of Nursing chief executive officer Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward believes it’s time to get the best equipment and allow clinicians to be educated on their jobs to realise their full potential.
She made the comment in a recent visit to the Ba and Lautoka hospitals a day before Aspen Medical took over full management of the two major facilities.
Prof Ward said the investment by Aspen Medical would allow better opportunities for nurses and healthcare workers to invest in their education.
“I think when nurses can work autonomously, when they can work to their full scope of practice and when they’re invested in their education, that’s when we’re at our happiest,” Prof Ward remarked.
“Nurses represent the best of humanity to people; they give a life of service, to care for people when they’re vulnerable.
“But we need all of the equipment and all the tools to be able to do our job properly so that we’re not pulled in too many different directions.” Prof Ward said the investment by Aspen Medical could offer some sense of confidence to the people in the Western Division knowing that they could comfortably sleep well at night knowing that their local services are being invested in and being upgraded.
She said Fijians deserved the best of care to worldwide standards and it’s time to modernise.
“It’s time to get the best equipment and allow clinicians to be educated to do their jobs to the full potential.
“And you shouldn’t have any person that requires health care in Fiji not getting the best standards that meet worldwide standards. So I think that this is a good day and a good sign and I’m excited that all the nurses that I’ve met have been giving positive feedbacks.”
