Waqatabu ready to lead Pearls

TELECOM Fijiana utility and Fiji Pearls skipper, Vaiti Waqatabu knows the responsibility of leading 13 players to face South Africa in the Digicel Punjas International Test Netball Series on Wednesday at the Vodafone Arena.

The Ra native began her netball career when she was at Adi Cakobau School and has no regrets.

To play against South Africa will bring back memories on her first trip in 2010 where she played for the ACSOG netball team at the Nasinu club championship.

Waqatabu who is the fastest runner in the team made a break in the national team to be part of their South African tour when she was 21 years old in that same year.

“They will come out hard and strong on Wednesday and for us we need to be strong physically and mentally,” Waqatabu said.

“They just came out from a competition in New Zealand and their team morale is very high at the moment so we’re expecting them to come out firing on us.

“Fitness wise, I know we’re lacking in that area but having the under-21 players in the squad will be a boost for the senior girls.

“‘We have to work more as a unit and communication on and of the court.”

Waqatabu made her first appearance in the Dubai 7s last year when she switched to 7s rugby.

She gained 60 caps beside her name after representing Fiji in the netball on the international scene from 2009 to 2015 and hopes to continue playing for Fiji in the near future.
