Some villages in the interior of Fiji do not have access to safe drinking water, says Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

He made the comment while handing over certificates to participants of a water safety plan training and formulation at Viwa Village, Bau in Tailevu yesterday.

More than 40 villagers were part of the three-day training facilitated by the ministry. “In the interior of Navosa, where my mother is from, they don’t have access to safe drinking water,” he said.

“At one point during the 1970s, they had closed down a school in Navosa because children had contracted typhoid from drinking contaminated water.”

Dr Waqainabete said Government was serious about fixing this problem.
