HONIARA, 19 APRIL 2019 (SIBC) – The Government House has received two candidates for the Solomon Islands Prime Minister’s post after the closure of nomination at 4pm Thursday.
The two candidates for the post are Manasseh Damukana Sogavare Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement (DCGA) and Mathew Wale for the Solomon Islands Democratic Party’s grand Coalition.
Sogavare was nominated by DCGA Coalition members Peter Shannel Angovaka, John Maneniaru, Jeremiah Manele and Fredrick Kologeto.
Wale was nominated by the Grand Coalition’s Danny Philip, Peter Kenilorea, Douglas Ete and Robertson Galokale.
Meanwhile, in an eleventh hour twist, Peter Kenilorea Jr, who was earlier favoured for nomination, and had generated public support this week, said the decision was made through deliberation and agreement inside the group including his United Party.
Kenilorea said he was happy with the public support and calls on people to remain calm and respect the government formation process.
“I want to urge people to look forward to the government that will come in, and this process must be one that is respected by everybody,” he said.
“But at the same time I would like to thank everybody who were behind me, in terms of my candidacy, at the time it wasn’t official, but it was identified by the group.
The Election of the Prime Minister will be held next Wednesday.
