Wakaniyasi: We want opportunities

“We do not want sympathy, we want opportunity.”

These were the words of Fiji Spinal Injury Association president Joshko Wakaniyasi during a reception co-hosted by the British High Commission in Suva last week.

The event was organised to celebrate the contribution of people living with disabilities in Fiji to the society.

Mr Wakaniyasi said they needed more opportunities in order to become successful in society.

“We want a space and opportunity so that we can also be part of society,” he said.

“Until you make that space, you will never realise what we can contribute. Equal rights and chances are needed to assist people living with disabilities.”

He said the Fiji Spinal Injury Association was working on getting products made by people living with disabilities stamped “Fijian Made”.

“We want products made by people living with disabilities to qualify under the Fijian Made brand.”

The association exists to support and empower people across Fiji living with disabilities.
