TO avoid high water bills, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has urged its customers to be vigilant and check for leaks in their plumbing.

In a statement, WAF stated the common causes of high water bills were leakages in plumbing and an increase in consumption by the customers.

“Common causes behind why some residents get high water bills are either because of pipe leaks in their plumbing, which constitutes the area from the connection after the water meter and along the resident’s pipeline to the house, including plumbing inside the house or consumption,” he said.

WAF stated any damages or leaks after the water meter was the responsibility of the customer.

“Being the customer’s responsibility, the customer is accountable for paying the bills accrued during this time, even if it is higher than usual.

“It is logical and common sense then, that any issue on the authority’s side that is before the customer’s meter will not add or subtract to the usage by the customer after the meter, because we only bill what has passed through the meter to the customer.

“Nothing WAF does before the meter will increase your bill and if it increases, it is simply customer’s consumption and/or leakage on the customer’s side.

“Customers are requested to monitor and control water usage and engage professionals to inspect, or repair, their leaks at the earliest and prevent further high bills in future and help conserve water.”

WAF reminded customers that if they could not afford to settle their total outstanding dues, they would be required to make a 50 per cent upfront payment, after which they could clear the remaining balance over a period of time.
