VATUWAQA Primary School is also one of the new teams at this year’s Fiji National Schools Swimming Competition which starts tomorrow at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva.

The school after introducing swimming lessons to its students decided to join in on the annual swimming competition. Team manager Kesaia Mucunabitu said they were looking forward to exposing their young swimmers into the competition.

“This is just a starting block for us and most students are just new to the program, but with this four swimmers we will go into the competition just to have a taste of what the swimming carnival is like because as first timers we want to see what it’s like to swim competitively,” said Mucunabitu.

Winning a medal will not be a priority for the small team of four swimmers who are excited for the two-day event.

“To win a medal would be a second priority, we initially just wanted to organise swimming classes for our kids so they may be able to learn basics of swimming but when the opportunity came up we decided to take it and just try out.

“We only have four students so far because this is just the first year for us and most of the other kids were not really consistent in their training. These four are our top swimmers and we will be bringing them to pool this weekend,” said Mucunabitu.

“We thank the school and the management for giving this opportunity for us to take part and also our coach Trisa Dunn who has been helping the student’s throughout our preparation,” she added.

The school will feature in 11 events this weekend.
