New Zealand Rugby chairman Brent Impey believes that Pacific Island rugby nations Fiji, Samoa and Tonga vote to re-elect Sir Bill Beaumont as World Rugby chairman was not a vote against Agustin Pichot but a vote against Sanzaar.

“Fiji in particular have been frustrated,” Impey told the Newsroom.

“They wanted to be involved in the Rugby Championship and Super Rugby for some time and have felt frustration at not being able to achieve that — there are multiple reasons why that is the case, not least being commercial viability.”

Samoa, Fiji and Japan ignored Sanzaar’s call to support Pichot, who would have defeated Beaumont had he secured those crucial votes.
