FIJIAN women suffer violence including physical, sexual or emotional violence and quite often the only choice is to flee to seek help.

This were the sentiments echoed by the Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Poverty Allevatiom Dr Josefa Koroivueta while officiating at the Gender Based Violence and Human Rights Training for senior officers of the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs at Warwick Fiji Resort in Sigatoka today.

Dr Koroivueta said violence  against  women  was  a  global  issue  of  pandemic  proportions,  which  has  an impact  on  all  societies.

He said it violated the rights and fundamental freedoms of victims or survivors.

Dr Koroivueta reiterated that one in every three women  around  the  world and in Fiji  has  been  beaten,  coerced  into sex  or  otherwise  abused  in  her  lifetime – with  the  abuser  usually  someone  known  to her.

“We know that violence against women and children is an issue in our country that requires urgent attention,” he added.
