Villagers around Vanua Levu have locked down their villages and restricted movement as part of COVID-19 precautions.

Kia Island villager Akuila Tutora said he had to take the measure.

“It’s very important that we do this because we need to save lives and prevent the illness from reaching our island,” he said.

“So we are not allowing any visitors into the villages on the island and for those who want to come and buy food they have been advised to head straight back home when they finish doing their business in town.” In Cakaudrove, Kioa Island, Urata and Nukubalavu villages have also restricted movement.

Tui Nasavusavu Ratu Apenisa Lovodua directed villagers in Nukubalavu to seal off the access road.

Villager Arthur Davis said they adhered to his directive and closed off the road to the village.
