THE World Wildlife Fund Pacific has commended villagers of Kinoya in Suva for releasing an endangered green turtle (Chelonia mydas).
They had caught the turtle with the intention to consume it.
A statement from WWF said the creature was caught by fisherwomen last Monday but was released after two villagers — Apisai Tinaikoro and Amini Vakalala — advised against it because of the current ban on the harvest of sea turtles.
WWF Pacific’s conservation director Francis Areki said they appreciated the duo’s efforts to save the turtle.
