Villagers on Dreketi, Qamea brace for strong winds, heavy rain

EIGHTY villagers of Dreketi on Qamea Island in Vanua Levu had started putting shutters to their homes due to strong winds and heavy rain this morning.

Sitiveni Gauna, 22 said sea level has started to rise as a result of adverse weather conditions.

“We are really worried because there are around seven elderly people that are over the age of 70 are in our village. Our evacuation and health centre including the school were destroyed in 2016 during a landslide,” he said.
