VILLAGERS are still optimistic about their plight for a facelift to their school dormitory.

This, a year after STC Harold wreaked havoc and damaged the Nasegai District School dormitory on Kadavu.

Nasegai Village headman Tevita Uluikadavu said the school catered for more than 100 students from pre-school to Year 8 from Nasegai and distant villages of Burelevu, Matanuku and Tabuya which were only accessible by boat.

Mr Uluikadavu claimed their plight for the repair of dormitory had been raised during district and provincial council meetings but had fallen on deaf ears.

He shared students found it hard to live in the damaged boys’ and girls’ dormitories during wet weather as rainwater seeped into the facilities, drenching their beddings.

“Last week, we collected $20 each from all the families in Nasegai Village to pay for the diesel for transportation to and from all the four villages.

“I think the Ministry of Education should look into the matter,” Mr Uluikadavu said.

He said another teacher’s quarters was blown away during TC Ana.

Mr Uluikadavu hoped something could be done soon to help the schoolchildren live in comfortable conditions.

He also claimed that he felt their plights may have fallen on deaf ears because all staff members at the school were women.

Questions sent Education Minister Rosy Akbar last week and yesterday remain unanswered.
