A 35-YEAR-OLD man of Nakavika Village in Ba died over the weekend due to “complications” during a diving expedition.
Mikaele Vasufue was on a diving trip with four other people from the village when the incident occurred.
His uncle, Isaia Usa, who is also the village headman, said Mr Vasufue was an experienced diver.
“He has been doing it for about 15 years,” he said.
Mr Usa said his nephew was a little sickly before the diving expedition but still went.
“He did not have any other means of income, this was the only way he earned money.”
According to Mr Usa, he was gravely concerned about the harmful effects of diving and had raised the issue with police.
Mr Vasufue is survived by his wife. His funeral is expected to be held on Sunday.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the diver died following what was believed to have been complications from a diving expedition.
“The victim was diving with others from his village close to midnight on Friday when it is alleged that he started experiencing breathing difficulties,” she said.
“He was rushed to the Ba Mission Hospital and was later transferred to the Lautoka Hospital where he passed away.”
A post-mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death. Investigations into the incident are continuing.
