Village celebrates Ro Jone’s posting

Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai was accorded a traditional ceremony at Nabitu Village in Tailevu yesterday.

Mr Kalouniwai’s late mother hails from the village.

The village hall and ground was a hive of activities as villagers danced and feasted to celebrate his appointment.

Village elder Lasaro Laqere said it was a special moment in history not only for the vanua o Naceruku but for the Burebasaga confederacy as well.

“It is a proud moment for all of us to see one of our own sons attain that offi ce as well as the rank of Major General,” he said.

Mr Laqere said Ro Jone’s achievement would inspire the younger generation of Nabitu to strive for success.

The RFMF band was on hand to provide entertainment in a large tent on the village green.

“It is very fitting becausethis is the first major celebratory occasion here in the village since the pandemic struck.

“For the past seven months, the only occasions here has been funerals and so we are honoured and proud to host this auspicious occasion.”
