A CANDLELIGHT vigil to commemorate the eight women who lost their lives to domestic violence was held at the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre in Suva yesterday.
The event was attended by members of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua and Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa.
A minute of silence was observed by the attendees.
FWCC co-ordinator Shamima Ali called on service providers to step up the fight against violence against women.
“Stop being bystanders if you know of a woman who is suffering at the hands of her partner, speak out and get help for her,” she said.
“We are calling out on men and boys to come on board because we at FWCC are helpless.”
Women facing any form of violence have been advised to call the FWCC helpline on 1560.
“Pass this helpline digits to women out there, call us at anytime and we are here to help you.”
