The Vesida volleyball team defeated Nepani One team three sets to one in the Saioni Volleyball Association Open Knockout tournament on Saturday.

The match was among the highlights of the tournament on the weekend. Association vice-president Ma’ake Tabua said the competition had intensified in the past weeks.

“The games continued because our players insisted that we go ahead with the competition despite the bad weather,” Tabua said.

“Our target in general is the sport to improve and we look after the youths at Kalabu Housing Estate, Delaitokatoka, Nadera and Kalabu Village.

“We are grateful for the Fiji National Sports Commission through its Train the Trainer program that we were able to set up a committee that can look after these three zones.

“A lot of our youths attended this program, the volleyball umpires program and netball umpiring program. Last year we attended a coaching clinic officiated by Peni Ratumaiyale.

“Through him we were able to come back and join Fiji Volleyball Federation and paid $150.

Now we are closely following the FVF criteria. We have done our TIN number and are working on opening a bank account.”

Tabua said the Nasinu Community Shield competition would have teams living in Nasinu to take part.

“We want to promote the sport in our Nasinu Zone because a lot of our youths are good volleyballers and a lot play for other associations such as Suva, Raiwai, Raiwaqa and Delainavesi.

“We would like to keep those talents here so that we can develop our youths here and also develop the sport.”
