Venue cost a big issue for promoters

BOXING Commission of Fiji (BCF) chairman Sara Bulutani Mataitawakilai said it was difficult for promoters to host events in the Central Division because of the high cost of venues.
He said they would now look at other options to stage promotions.
“It is hard for promoters to organise any fight in the Central Division,” Mataitawakilai said.
“Westwood Boxing Promotions organised its first promotion successfully at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay early this month, but the space was not big enough to draw a big crowd.
BCF will approach Nausori Town Council in writing to negotiate for the sport to be permitted at Ratu Cakobau Park, but this will be subject to the weather because the ring will require proper shelter to protect it from getting wet. Mataitawakilai said Majesty Promotions, under promoter Sudesh Ram, was scheduled to host a nine-bout professional boxing program next month. The venue is yet to be decided.
“The BCF has received the line-up and have sanctioned all the nine bouts. Joseph Kwadjo and NZ-based Iraqi national Sivan Hermez are to fight in the light heavyweight 10 x 3 main bout,” he said.
“Majesty promotions is organising a program with names such as super welterweight boxer Krishna Mudaliar, Ulaiasi Qalomai, Iosefo Cakaunivalu, Jonny Singh who is making a return since June 2017 and heavyweight boxer Vilimoni Taganikoro, who is expected to meet Isoa Naruba of Navosa.
“Four boxers will be making their debut. Joy Ali and Farzan Ali’s nephew Nikesh Prasad will make his professional debut and Sakaraia Ve will unleash Noa Tubaka, who Ve has been training for some time. Noa is the son of former boxer Sivinia Koroi.”
When contacted promoter Ram said he was yet to finalise the venue and the final list of boxers.
