THE Island Chill Suva Open Tennis Championship will be held after seven years at the Victoria Tennis Court and Suva Lawn Tennis Club courts this weekend.

The tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday and is being run by Suva District Association with former local champion, Graham Venkataya.

Venkataya represented Fiji in many tournaments and is back from Vancouver, Canada, after 36 years.

He was born and raised in Suva, introduced to tennis at the age of 15 and was well known when he beat local champ Cliff Benson and won the singles titles in Suva.

Venkataya said his return to Fiji was about giving back to the sport and help groom the young tennis players.

“I love the sport,” said Venkataya.

“I’m looking to bring profile to tennis because Suva used to be a flagship of tennis in the past when I was playing and we have better players who already represent Fiji.

“I was one of the best tennis players in the 1970 s and because of my sporting background and my certified coach from Canada, it will be a good opportunity to utilise the talent of our youths.”

Venkataya said he wanted to develop the youths and also upgrade the tennis courts.

“I’m here to upgrade Victoria Tennis Courts.”

The three days event will be sponsored by Island Chill as well as JR White and QAQA.
