Nausori market vendors and those from nearby areas say they are feeling the pinch in terms of low sales during the second wave of COVID-19.

Emosi Varivai, a vendor at Naselai Village, Tailevu, said he has not made any profit for the past three weeks.

Mr Varivai said he used to sell three sacks of cassava in one day before COVID-19 but now sells one sack in two days.

“Right now, people are not buying like before because a lot of people are not getting paid,” the 61-year-old said.

“I used to get around $300 to $400 profit a week but these last three weeks, I have not been able to make any profit.”

Mr Varivai said he sold fruit such as pawpaw, bananas and pineapple, vegetables such as rourou, moca and bele, and root crops such as cassava, dalo, kumala and vudi.

He said he always gave greens and other vegetables to widows and the needy in his village if stock was not sold.

Mr Varivai said he used to work as a security officer at the Peninsula Hotel before he retired and decided to become a market vendor.
