Vehicle owners advised to secure their property at all times

Fijian Police have advised motor vehicle owners to secure their cars at all times and avoid leaving the keys inside because it becomes an easy target for opportunists.

The advice follows reports of two cases of motor vehicle thefts that were reported in the Southern and Western divisions.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the first case was reported on February 14 at the Valelevu Police Station in  Nasinu.

She said the driver of the taxi had stopped to buy a bottle of juice at a service station without allegedly locking his car, and when he returned, found his car missing.

The car was later found abandoned in Tovata, Makoi.

Ms Naisoro said a 30-year-old man residing in Namadi was later charged for theft of a motor vehicle and will be produced at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.

In the second case reported in Nadi, a 17-year-old youth from Nawaka was brought in for questioning for a similar offence that took place yesterday morning.

Ms Naisoro said the suspect allegedly stole the vehicle that was parked at the Nadi Hospital when the owner from Korovuto in Nadi did not securely lock his car while he went inside the hospital.

The vehicle was later located at Votualevu.

Investigations continue.
