About 20 primary schoolchildren escaped death when the vehicle they were travelling in tumbled down a slope in Drasa, Lautoka, yesterday.

Concerned parent Fouzia Sareema Bano said her two children were involved in the accident and her daughter was treated at the Lautoka Hospital while her son was still under observation after sustaining bruises to parts of his body.

“It was around 7.15am, the RSL (Rural Service Licence) three-tonne van usually picks my children from home, the accident happened just before school,” Ms Bano said.

“It happened all of a sudden and it was sad to see that a number of children got injured when the vehicle tumbled.”

Ms Bano said drivers of RSL vehicles tasked to transport children to school should ensure the safety of their vehicles before their day began.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro confirmed a number of children were taken to the Lautoka Hospital after the accident as they had sustained injuries.

She added an investigation was underway regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident.
