ONE hundred seventy-one residents of Vanuakula in Naitasiri will no longer have to rely on the existing intermittent water supply and will now receive a consistent water supply to their village.
This after the commissioning of their rural water project earlier this month.
The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) constructed a new dam in the hills 3.47 kilometres outside the village, a 10,000 gallon ferro-cement tank and installed 19 standpipes and showers for the villagers which also caters for the 187 students who attend Vanuakula Catholic Primary School.
This was done with the help of the Vanuakula Water Committee.
Vanuakula chief Ratu Etuate Karikaritu thanked the Government for the assistance to the project.
“I thank the government; I thank the Prime Minister for helping us in giving us the grant which is a big help. I also thank the WAF for helping us too. We never knew and never dreamt of that one time we will get a dam of our own, but now we’ve got one,” Ratu Etuate said.
The project was commissioned by chief guest Archbishop Peter Loy Chong.
