Vakatale – Fiji’s first female deputy PM – dies aged 85

Former politician and Fiji’s first female Deputy Prime Minister Taufa  Vakatale has passed away at the age of 85.

The former Education minister passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023.

Daughter Alanieta Vakatale while paying tribute to her mother on social media said: “Last Saturday, our hearts broke with the passing of our family matriarch.”

“Thank you to all friends and family for respecting the traditional protocol process we had to go through to inform close relatives before formally announcing it to the rest of Fiji and the world,” Ms Vakatale said.

In line with her wishes, there will be no reguregu (traditional funeral protocols), however, anyone should like to visit the family, they will be receiving visitations from Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 55 Salato Road, Namadi Heights, Suva.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 30, 2023, at the Wesley Church on Butt Street, Suva at 9am and she will be laid to rest at the Lovonilase cemetery.
