FIJI’s first medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas has come from swimmer Taichi Vakasama in the 200m breastroke.
The bronze medal is Team Fiji’s first in a swimming event in any Commonwealth Youth Games.
Vakasama clocked a personal best in the heat with a time of 2 minutes 17.17 seconds and bettered it in the final timing 2 m16.44s.
Vakasama also beat the old national open record by four seconds, which he set in 2015.
Meanwhile, swimmer Temafa Yalimaiwai broke Carl Probert’s 26-year-old record in the 15-16 age group 200m freestyle after he came first in his heats with a time of 2m04.21s. The old record was 2m04.52secs.
Rosemarie Rova gave her best and finished seventh in the 200m freestyle event. Vakasama, Rova and Yalimaiwai continue their competitions today.
In tennis, Vienna Kumar continues through to the second round after her opponent failed to make it to the court while Sebastian Tikaram succumbed to his Sri Lankan opponent two sets to nil.
Team Fiji rugby women’s team started the competition with a 29-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago but lost its next two matches 7-40 to Canada and 5-41 to Australia.
The Fiji men’s team started with a resounding victory over hosts Bahamas 59-0 before being tested by Sri Lanka 14-7. The side lost its third match to Canada 19-21.
