WEIGHT-LIFTING gold medal prospect Apolonia Vaivai aims to win gold for Team Fiji in her second attempt at the Commonwealth Games.
Vaivai won bronze in the 2014 Commonwealth Games while competing in the 75kg category.
“My aim is to do better than what I lift in 2014. I’ve gone down to 69kg and I am expecting some tough opponents to test me out come April,” she said.
“India and Australia are two countries that I am looking out for because they have tough lifters who are very confident and determined.
“It is not that I don’t have faith in myself, but they were very good lifters back then and I am expecting a similar performance from them.”
The Taveuni lass said it could be anyone’s game but it came down to how confident and secure you were towards your goal.
“For this sport, it is all about your mentality in setting your path in the right direction and you will never go astray,” Vaivai said.
“Be positive, believe and have faith in yourself, which is our motto.”
Apolonia, won Team Fiji’s first medal at the Asian Games and also won three gold medals after competing in the women’s 75kg senior weight-lifting competition at the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu last year.
