Minister for Women Mereseini Vuniwaqa recently handed over more than $4000 worth of sets of new kitchen utensils to the Lokia Women’s Group to assist them generate income through their catering business.

The project was initiated by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama after it was raised during a talanoa session earlier this year.

“I wish to take this time to thank all the rural women in Fiji for their invaluable contribution to nation-building in ways they and the people around them do not realise,” Mrs Vuniwaqa said.

Group member Mereoni Niubasaga thanked Government for responding to their request. She said the group had other small business initiatives that also financially assisted the women.

“We rent out 100 pieces of roofing iron for functions and we also hire out our boat and the money goes directly to the group,” she said.

“We will also do the same with this new set of kitchen utensils.” She said every Tuesday was Women’s Day where women cleaned up the village surrounds and did weaving and other projects.
